*Temporary Local Rule*

Preferred Lies

In order to promote fair play the following temporary rule is now in force and will remain so until further notice. A ball lying on a closely- mown area through the green may, without penalty, be lifted and cleaned. Before lifting the ball the player must mark its position. Having lifted the ball, it must be placed on a spot within six inchesof and not nearer the hole than where it originally lay, that is not in a hazard and not on a putting green. In addition on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 17th holes only, a ball lying in any rough or semi-rough area, may, without penalty, be lifted and cleaned. Before lifting the ball the player must mark its position. Having lifted the ball, it must be placed on a spot, in the rough or semi-rough, within six inchesof and not nearer the hole than where it originally lay.

A player may place the ball only once, and it is in play when it has been placed (Rule 20-4). Except that Rule 20-3d applies:-

If the ball fails to come to rest on the spot on which it is placed, there is no penalty and the ball must be replaced. If it still fails to come to rest on that spot, it must be placed at the nearest spot where it can be placed at rest that is not nearer the hole and not in a hazard. If the ball when placed comes to rest on the spot on which it is placed and subsequently moves, there is no penalty and the ball must be played as it lies, unless the provision of any other rule applies.

If the player fails to mark the position of the ball before lifting it or moves the ball in any other manner, such as rolling it with a club, a one stroke penaltyis incurred.

*Penalty for Breach of Local Rule*

If a player incurs the general penalty for a breach of this Local Rule, no additional penalty under the Local Rule is applied.
